What were we thinking! promote confidence and reduce distress in parents with a first baby

New friends

New friends

I can’t believe how much of the day I spend feeding, changing and settling baby Ari, if anyone had told me I don’t think I would have believed them. I thought babies slept most of the time and never imagined it was such a full time (day and night) work. Even though my friend Annie who has a 9 month old baby advised me to catch up on sleep during the day when Ari sleeps, I find it hard to do, I could not describe the exhaustion to my work friends as I know they just wouldn’t understand. I attended my first new parent group yesterday at the Maternal and Child Health centre, I was a bit nervous at first as I was sure that the other mums would be doing a better job than me and I suppose I didn’t want to hear that their babies slept all night. Well I didn’t have to worry, they were so supportive and what a relief that they are worried about the same things and the overwhelming exhaustion of waking up 2 or 3 times over night. Our nurse was also very supportive and left us to form friendships at the end of the session. Apparently crying up to 3 hours a day is normal and that it peaks at 6 weeks, and then starts to lessen. I will let you know how it goes. Dimitri has been really supportive and does housework or gets dinner for us after work, some days I just want to hand Ari over to him as he walks through the door as need a few minutes to myself.
